If you have ever had a friend “buzz you in” to his or her apartment building, then you have encountered an electric strike. An electric strike is a very common security mechanism that allows someone inside a building to unlock a main entryway or office door from a distance. This allows people not only to know that their entryways are securely and permanently locked until they press the button, but also to save time and energy when letting someone into their building or office. This time and energy saving aspect can be particularly useful in large buildings with multiple levels.

One type of electric strike is referred to as “fail-safe”. Fail-safe electric strikes remain locked only while power is being supplied to them. In the case of a power outage, doors containing fail-safe electric strikes should have back-up mechanisms to keep them locked so that building security is not compromised.

The more common and secure type of electric strike is the “fail-secure”. Fail-secure strikes remain locked even when no power is being supplied to them. This type of strike has obvious benefits over its fail-safe counterpart, as no back-up locking mechanisms are required and building security is more easily maintained during power outages.

Another difference in electric strike design is in the type of current they use. Those that use AC current usually emit a loud buzzing sound when the door lock is disengaged. This sound is due to the current passing through the strike itself. Some people prefer a silent strike, and in that case DC current is used. The only sound associated with a DC powered electric strike will be the click of the door unlocking. Strikes operating on DC current can be equipped with a signal sound, however, if a sound emitting device is wired in parallel to the strike itself.

Have you ever wondered why skeleton keys are not used that much anymore? One of the most important answers to this is because they are so easy to forge.

Skeleton keys have a long shaft, followed by a specifically shaped tooth - which is the unique feature of the key. However, the drawback here is that unlike traditional keys which are somewhat longer and harder to cut, skeleton keys can be replicated in just a matter of moments by anyone who knows what they are doing.

New advances.

In saying that, a new range of skeleton keys are now available for people who prefer to use these over the new alternatives. The main difference here is that unlike the old ones, and the shaft is actually relevant to the opening mechanism. This means that there are technically two features of the key which need to fit into the skeleton lock in order for it to open.

These days, you are most likely to find skeleton key locks on doors which are very old, or on properties for which their owners are trying to keep a historic feel.

The authentic look can sometimes be worth a lot of money, and in fact in some cases, property owners have specifically and purposely chosen to go with the skeleton key to ensure that an entire property is in keeping with its theme - right down to the security features.

Technology has come a long way in recent times, and amazingly, one of the most innovative new product is a security system which allows you to view what is going on in your home - wherever you have access to the Internet.

Of course, such a system will take a little bit of setting up and getting used to. It is not recommended that you use this if you are not computer literate, or Internet savvy. This is more of an option for people who are confident with computers and networking, and who will be able to use this to their advantage.

Whilst it sounds like a difficult idea to implement, watching your home over the Internet is actually no more difficult than keeping an Internet connection running, and installing a few cameras in your house.

If there is one lesson that we have learnt very quickly in life, it is that we shouldn’t trust everyone we meet. In the same sense, it is good to keep in mind that just because you have employed someone recently, does not mean that you are able to trust them.

Working out who has an office key, and who should have authorised access to particular parts of the office, is something which needs careful consideration. You, your boss, and even your employees should all be involved in this process.

There is a lot at stake and a corporate office, and hence you should be very cautious to hand out keys which might put specific information at risk. We also advise that a few to hand out keys to your office, you have a separate section within your office to keep private documents and files away from prying eyes.

It is always a good a idea to talk to a certified locksmith in order to get the best solution for your security needs.

Everyone has seen those pesky motion senor lights in movies – you know, the ones where the homeowners wake up each and every time a cat walks past or a tree sways in the wind?

Thankfully, motion sensor lights have come a long way since then (despite TV audiences still having to put up with that past stereotype). Nowadays you are able to purchase outdoor motion lights which only activate when a human being walks into the sensors field.

How do these work? Basically, the idea is that the sensor picks up any infrared signals that are given off by heat from a human body. When these are picked up, the light is activated.

This reduces the number of false alarms because it is heat activated, rather than motion activated - meaning that trees will not set the lights off.

Mul-T-Lock is a leading manufacturer of high security locks, offering a wide range of commercial and residential locking systems. Their locks have features that set them apart from the run of the mill locks that can be easy targets to a determined intruder. The Mul-T-Lock Interactive platform has a plug with a unique structure. This special structure ensures that when the top and bottom pins, plug, and body meet, a shear line is formed creating an almost spherical three-dimensional shape to deter lock picking. There are also steel inserts to deter anyone trying to drill out the lock. When the lock is Master Keyed, additional back or side pins can be incorporated, raising the Mul-T-Lock’s security profile even higher.

The key system developed by Mul-T-Lock adds another layer of security to the system. Their telescopic pin tumbler mechanism and spring-loaded pin in the cylinder combine to make a “virtual combination” that can be opened only by putting the key in the lock. The Interactive key and key blank system are patented and provide an unsurpassed level of control and security over the key cutting process. Keys can only be cut by professional Mul-T-Lock locksmiths, and only after presenting the Mul-T-Lock key card and actual verification of customer identity.

High security locks can give you a sense of safety and peace of mind, knowing you are making the best choice to safeguard what you hold most dear. Mul-T-Lock high security locks are designed to withstand everything an intruder can throw at them, they meet or exceed every standard of pick and drill resistance out there, and they offer a wide range of products that can be integrated into a single system, making it simple for you to protect every part of your home.

Everyone knows how important it is to lock up every night, whether it is at home or at work. However, all the time spent checking the locks can be a moot point if the locks in use are not high quality.

Some people turn to low grade locks for their cheaper price, but the compromise is usually not cost-effective in the long run. After all, from a simple durability standpoint, investing in a high quality lock is likely to lead to more years of use, which cancels out the initial cost upfront. A good lock can last significantly longer, and the price of replacing a low quality lock does not compare.

More than that, the entire functionality of a lock depends on its strength. For a lock to truly do its job, it has to be strong enough to hold up to outside force. Locks made of lesser quality simply lack the strength to hold up to the force that good quality locks can easily endure.

Ultimately, the strength of a high quality lock is not only more cost-effective, but also a better security solution. A lock that is easily broken allows intruders to have quick access to the interior, which affords them the cover they need to complete their illicit activities. While high tech security systems feature alarms can help, the inconvenience of a solid lock is more likely to deter criminals, who do not want to risk the extended time it takes to break a high quality lock.

When you are choosing locks for your windows, be sure the locks can secure window whether they’re partially open for ventilation or closed tightly. If you have aluminum framed windows, there are locks that can secure in both open and closed positions, and certain types can even make entry more difficult if the glass is broken. Different locks work best with certain types of windows, and a locksmith will know which choices are best.
For double-hung windows, you need to be sure that you have a deadbolt fastened to the window sash because these windows are easily broken into by even less professional burglars, especially if they’re windows on a ground floor. Seasonally, people will sometimes put window fans or air-conditioning units in their windows, and this is a concern if proper cane is not taken to secure the windows where they are mounted. There are locks that have security screws that can be installed to help prevent break-ins through these windows.

Consulting a professional locksmith who can inspect your home and advise as to the best flock fittings for your particular type of windows that will offer the most security is probably the best way to start your shopping for locks and security for all your home’s entryways, including windows.

Dead bolt locks outperform door knob locks in terms of strength and durability. They also deter burglars, who usually will be discouraged at the sight of a dead bolt lock and move on to another house. Another advantage to using a dead bolt lock is a lower possibility of locking yourself outside because you need the key to lock the door from the exterior when you leave.

The deadbolt lock uses a type of lock cylinder that can only be moved from the open position by turning the cylinder. This requires either a turning knob or a key. The common door knob lock uses a spring-bolt combination, where the spring holds the bolt in place. This lock can be opened with a key that pulls the bolt back, but the bolt can also be jimmied back by force on the bolt.

The dead bolt will be constructed with either a single or double cylinder. With a single cylinder, there is a knob on the inside and a key for the outside of the lock. The double cylinder operates with a key on both sides and there is no knob. It is recommended for fire safety to use the inside knob style, but if the lock is near a window that can be smashed and is in reach of the lock, the double key style is preferred.

Some dead bolt locks are manufactured to be impact, pick and lock bump resistant. An optional metal door edge wrap can help prevent delaminating and force failure. Some new dead bolt locks feature keyless entry, with biometric finger scan technology, and some feature remote control operation. ANSI 1 rated locks are recommended.

Dead bolts should be installed on all exterior doors, and doors between garages and the house. Guard access to keys, and keep house keys separate from car keys. This prevents duplication of your house keys when you have your car at the repair shop. If you have outside help who have access to lock keys, you should have the lock re-keyed when they are no longer employed at your home or business.

If you have the misfortune of being locked out of your home or car, you should never try opening locks on your own. For example, your car is outside a place of business and you are trying to pick the lock or worse trying to pry open a window, if someone doesn’t know that’s your car, they may call law enforcement on you which create a new set of problems. In the case of being locked out of your home, if your home has a security system, trying to pry open a door or window might trigger the security alarm.

If a relative isn’t available to bring you spare keys, or you don’t have a feature with your home or car insurer for when you are locked out, the best course of action is to call a locksmith. They can work quickly to get your home or car unlocked at a very affordable price. Instead of your home or car being at risk with scratches and damages on their locks due to your trying to get in, a locksmith will keep your locks intact and are available any time of the day. They can repair and change your locks immediately.

The biggest thing to remember as to why you should never try opening locks on your own is the time and money wasted. As soon as you realize you don’t have the keys to open your home or car, that’s the time to get professional help regardless of the situation.
